The Uncertainity Principle in the a World of Unprecedented Change

What Is the Uncertainty Principle?

At the quantum level, Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle tells us that the more precisely you know a particle’s position, the less precisely you can know its momentum—and vice versa.

Initially, I assumed this was a limitation of early scientific tools. But soon I realized: it's not about the tools. It's about the nature of reality itself. Particles behave as both waves and particles. And the very act of observing one property disrupts the other. The observer changes the system.

I understood this intuitively, having managed people on Performance Improvement Plans (PIPs). The moment someone feels they're being observed, their behavior shifts. They may perform differently, not because they’ve changed, but because they’re being watched.

Seldom do people "dance like nobody’s watching," because everyone is. The uncertainty principle—strange as it sounds—is one of the most powerful metaphors for modern leadership and self-development.

Position vs. Momentum in Life and Leadership

We’re living in exponential times—AI breakthroughs, shifting social contracts, economic volatility. And while this isn’t new to me (I’ve been riding this wave since the '80s in Silicon Valley), I still see how many people crave certainty.

We want to know: Where am I? Am I secure? What’s the plan? This is a position-based mindset. But here’s the paradox: The more tightly you grip your position, the more you lose touch with your momentum. A fixed position may feel safe—but it often comes at the cost of flexibility, creativity, and forward motion. In a world defined by change, what’s more valuable—feeling safe, or staying in motion?

Really...what is safe?

How We Measure “Position” in Silicon Valley

In Silicon Valley, we’re trained to measure “where we are” with dashboards and KPIs:

  • Revenue growth (ARR/MRR)

  • Burn rate and runway

  • Funding stage (Seed, Series A/B/C)

  • Headcount, key hires

  • Market visibility and investor reputation.

These are comforting markers. They give the illusion of stability. But the greatest returns in the Valley have rarely come from tracking metrics. They’ve come from backing founders with vision, teams with energy, and organizations in motion. The best investors are betting on momentum—on someone’s ability to navigate ambiguity, adapt, and spot the signal in the noise.

The real danger in careers and achievement? When leaders over-index on position, they stop steering toward possibility. They start managing their dashboard instead of their direction.

As an executive coach, I work with exceptional leaders who struggle to balance "managing up" and taking meaningful actions, also known as "getting s--t done" (GST).

How to Focus on Where You’re Going

Focusing on momentum—where you're headed—is a different practice altogether. It means asking: In what direction are we moving? Are we accelerating or plateauing? Are our decisions aligned with purpose and possibility?

Momentum isn’t always visible on a dashboard. It shows up in:

  • The energy of your team

  • The velocity of learning (think AI)

  • The boldness of your experiments (think AI, think empowering your teams to get outside the box)

  • Your willingness to iterate and adapt (coaching is about change; in mindset, in connection with others, in behaviors)

In short: Momentum is your compass.

The Quantum Self: A Field of Possibility

Leaders don’t live in fixed states. We’re complex, contradictory, and beautifully multidimensional. You can feel ready and scared. You can seek stability and crave change. That’s superposition, not confusion. It's your human quantum state. And just like in quantum physics, where you place your attention—your intention—collapses the wave into action. So pause and ask yourself: Am I focused on where I am, or where I’m going? You don’t need full clarity to move forward.

You need presence, intention, and a willingness to lead into the unknown. However, the world is happening at a rapid pace, and input is immediate and direct. As a coach, I help my clients develop the capability to suspend their response, recognize and appreciate the moment without judgment, name it, and then, fully present, make a choice. It's mindfulness. It's a steady heart, a steady hand.

Practical Wisdom for the Quantum Leader

1. Embrace the Blur

Let go of perfect clarity. In a complex world, your “position” will always be a bit fuzzy. The goal isn’t precision—it’s alignment. The desire for certainty is human. The ability to act without it is leadership.

2. Prioritize Momentum Over Metrics

Metrics matter—but they trail behind movement. Momentum leads.

So ask:

  • What experiments are we running?

  • Where are we learning and evolving?

  • What’s emerging beneath the surface?

3. Cultivate Conscious Intention

You are the observer. Where you focus shapes what becomes real.

So ask:

  • What future am I building today?

  • Where am I placing my attention?

  • What trade-offs am I choosing—and why?

Theory Meets Reality

Let’s bridge the metaphor:

  • “Where we are” is often about status—titles, runway, or this quarter’s metrics.

  • “Where we’re going” lives in movement—your intention, your experiments, your evolving alignment.

Trying to master both with precision—just like in the quantum world—is impossible. The most resilient leaders let go of perfect clarity and lean into conscious momentum.

At Mastery Studio: Confidence in Motion

We call this practice confidence in motion—leading with presence, even in the fog. If you're navigating reinvention, transition, or complex leadership challenges, our coaching can help you:

  • Build adaptive momentum

  • Align vision with motion

  • Move forward without needing a perfect map

One of my personal mantras this year is 'I am becoming.' This is grounded in the acceptance, gratitude, and appreciation of the knowledge of "I am who I am, I've done what I have done, I’ve learned what I have, I have more learning to do and I always will".

At this point, in this moment, "Become, like nobody is watching." Don’t be surprised…nobody really is watching you. So might as well dance!

In our next post, we’ll explore Entropy—and why disorder may not be your enemy, but your greatest ally in innovation, renewal, and transformation. Until then: Embrace the blur. Trust your momentum. Lead like a wave.
